In a historic first, India has launched a proactive legal assistance scheme for families of armed forces personnel.

Named the NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025, the initiative aims to relieve soldiers stationed in difficult terrains from the burden of domestic legal disputes, ensuring their families receive proper legal representation.

The scheme was formally launched today in Srinagar by Justice Surya Kant, Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the next Chief Justice of India. The event was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Purpose of the Scheme

The initiative addresses a long-standing challenge faced by soldiers deployed in remote locations who are often unable to pursue personal legal matters such as family property disputes or domestic issues. Under the programme, NALSA will ensure representation of such cases in courts across the country, extending support not just to armed forces personnel but also to paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF, and ITBP.

Justice Surya Kant, inspired by the sacrifices made during Operation Sindoor, reportedly emphasized that “the legal fraternity must step in to safeguard the interests of those who defend the nation.”

Key Features:

  • Free legal aid for families of soldiers and paramilitary forces.

  • Coverage of cases ranging from property disputes to family issues.

  • A nationwide legal support network coordinated by NALSA.

The scheme marks an unprecedented step in linking the judiciary directly with the welfare of armed forces personnel. Justice Kant will officially take charge as Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025.
