Nagaland minister Temjen Imna Along has condemned a Naga student’s offensive remarks about late singer Zubeen Garg at Kaziranga University in Assam and issued an apology on behalf of the student. Speaking to the media, the minister emphasised that Zubeen was a pride not just for Assam but for the entire Northeast and India.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Saturday when a B.Tech civil engineering student made derogatory comments about Zubeen during an argument with peers. A video of the exchange circulated on social media, sparking resentment among students and outsiders.
Minister Along assured that over 300 Naga students at the university are safe and urged all students to avoid emotional outbursts on social media during this sensitive period of mourning. He thanked Assam police and officials for their swift intervention, which prevented further unrest.
Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away on Friday in Singapore during a scuba diving accident. He will be cremated with full state honours on September 23 at Kamarkuchi village in Sonapur, near Guwahati.
