A murder accused lodged in Sundaragada Jail escaped from the District Headquarters Hospital while undergoing treatment today, sparking a massive search operation.
The accused, identified as Tekchand Behera, had been admitted to the surgery ward on Tuesday after developing health complications. He was brought from jail for medical care. Preliminary reports suggest Behera slipped away under the pretext of going to the toilet.
Jail staff raised an alarm after noticing his absence, but initial searches failed to trace him. Police were immediately informed, and a dog squad was deployed to track the fugitive.
Behera was lodged in Sundaragada Jail as an undertrial prisoner in connection with a murder case registered at Sundaragada Sadar police station.
Authorities said efforts are continuing to locate and apprehend him, with police and jail officials coordinating the search across Sundaragada town and adjoining areas.
