A dramatic hostage situation at RA Studio in Powai ended in a swift rescue operation on Thursday, as Mumbai Police commandos freed 17 children and two adults held captive by a disgruntled studio employee.
The suspect, Rohit Arya, was critically injured during the operation and later succumbed to a bullet wound.
A 35-Minute Operation That Saved Lives
The crisis began around 2 PM when Arya, reportedly conducting auditions at the studio, barricaded himself with the children and threatened to set the building ablaze. Negotiations failed, prompting police to storm the premises. Arya fired at officers, leading to a retaliatory shot by the lead commando. Eight commandos entered through a bathroom and safely evacuated the hostages.
The Man Behind the Siege
Arya, a Nagpur native residing in Chembur, had previously worked on the Maharashtra government’s “Majhi Shala, Sundar Shala” initiative. Sources say he felt sidelined and launched an agitation in 2024. Despite assurances from Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, Arya’s grievances remained unresolved.
In a chilling video released during the standoff, Arya claimed he wasn’t seeking ransom but demanded a conversation with authorities. “A normal person just wants to talk,” he said, warning that harm to the children would not be his responsibility.
Aftermath and Investigation
Arya was rushed to a trauma centre and later declared dead. His body has been sent to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation. Police recovered a firearm, chemicals, and a lighter from the scene, now under forensic examination.
A City Shaken, Children Safe
Witnesses described seeing children peering through glass windows during the ordeal. All hostages were reunited with their families at the site. The incident has sparked renewed conversations about mental health, institutional neglect, and studio safety protocols.
