Mumbai Coastal Road BMW Crash: 3 Killed, 1 Critical in Tragic Accident

A horrific high-speed accident turned tragic in the early hours of Sunday morning when a speeding luxury BMW crashed and plunged off a bridge on the Mumbai Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College.

The catastrophic crash left three young occupants dead and a fourth passenger fighting for his life in critical condition at Nair Hospital.

According to officials at the Coastal Road Control Room, the incident took place around 5:20 AM as the black BMW was travelling at high speed from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, striking the boundary wall/divider before the luxury sedan tore through an overhead signboard and plunged nearly 75 feet off the elevated bridge stretch.

Emergency response teams rushed all four occupants to the civic-run Nair Hospital, where doctors pronounced three of them dead. Two of the deceased victims have been identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhairya Seth. Authorities later identified the third deceased passenger as 19-year-old Aditya Jakasania.

The sole survivor, identified as 23-year-old Aditya Oswal, remains in critical condition in the hospital’s trauma ward undergoing intensive medical treatment.

The visual impact of the crash highlights the sheer velocity at which the car was moving. The BMW was completely mangled upon impact—its roof pushed inwards, windshield smashed into hundreds of pieces, the front end crushed to a frame, and internal engine components scattered across the wreckage site.

Mumbai Police have registered an inquiry and are reviewing CCTV footage along the Coastal Road corridor to reconstruct the precise sequence of events leading up to the tragedy. Investigators are also probing whether reckless driving, overspeeding, or racing were contributing factors.

The tragedy comes just weeks after the Mumbai Police took strict action on September 3 against a group of supercars—including a Lamborghini, a BMW M2, and a BMW Z4—for high-speed racing inside the Coastal Road tunnel, registering cases under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligent and reckless driving.

The 10.58-kilometre high-speed Coastal Road corridor connecting Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has seen increased police vigilance following repeated reports of night-time speeding. Further details from the police investigation and forensic reports are awaited.
