Dhenkanal: An 11-year-old girl drowned in a pond near her home at Siaria village under Sadar police limits in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Suchismita Behera.
According to reports, the incident took place while Suchismita had gone to a pond near her house for a wash when she accidentally slipped into the pond and drowned. The family member searched for her but in vain. Later they informed the Fire Service suspecting that she might have drowned in the pond.
On being informed, the firefighters reached the spot and recovered the body from the pond. Suchismita was rushed to the district headquarters hospital here where she was declared dead by the doctors.
A pall of gloom descended in the village following the incident.
