The Ministry of Tourism sanctioned 40 projects worth Rs 3295.76 crore under the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ scheme during the financial year 2024–25.

The initiative aims to comprehensively develop iconic tourist destinations across India and brand them at a global level.

Officials explained that the projects were identified through proposals submitted by State Governments. Moreover, the evaluation process considered parameters such as site connectivity, tourism ecosystem, carrying capacity, sustainability measures, project impact, value creation, and marketing plans. In addition, the scheme guidelines encourage State Governments to consult stakeholders and local communities while preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs).

The sanctioned projects are being implemented and managed by the respective State Governments. However, the Ministry of Tourism periodically reviews progress and urges States to expedite implementation in a time-bound manner.

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. He emphasised that SASCI represents a strategic effort to elevate India’s tourism infrastructure, strengthen sustainability, and enhance global competitiveness. Furthermore, he highlighted that the scheme will create opportunities for employment, innovation, and community empowerment.

By focusing on iconic centres, SASCI seeks to attract international visitors and generate long-term value. The Ministry expects the projects to improve infrastructure, boost connectivity, and promote sustainable tourism practices. Consequently, the initiative will position India’s tourist destinations on the global map and ensure that tourism contributes more effectively to economic growth and cultural promotion.
