Balasore: Medium range cruise missile Nirbhay-ITCM successfully test-fired from launch-pad 3 at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Balaosore’s Chandipur on Wednesday.
According to officials, the missile can use both conventional and nuclear weapons of 200 to 300 kilograms. It travels 4 to 7 times faster than the speed of sound.
This was fired at 9:55 am today and the surface version of the missile has a strike range upto 750-1000 km. The missile is using a turbofan engine and is currently being tested using the ‘manic turbofan’ engine, the officials added.
The missile was primarily designed and developed by the Advanced Defence Establishment of DRDO located in Bengaluru in cooperation with other DRDO laboratories.
Nirbhay missile was India’s first indigenously developed cruise missile. The weapon system that has completed six developmental trials between 2012 and 2019 was recently deployed following Chinese aggression along the line of actual control.
