A 15-year-old girl from Gagpal village under Raj Barhampur police limits in Mayurbhanj district consumed poison after a dispute with her family over a mobile phone.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when the girl, identified as Runu Naik, was watching her mobile at home.
Her mother and maternal uncle reportedly snatched the device and broke it, following repeated complaints from her father about excessive mobile use. Angered by the act, Runu threatened to consume poison and locked herself inside a room. She then drank pesticide stored in the house.
Family members broke open the door and rushed her to Udala Medical for treatment. Despite efforts by doctors, she died shortly after admission. Police reached the hospital, seized the body, and initiated an investigation.
Witnesses said Runu had earlier expressed frustration over restrictions on her mobile use. The sudden act shocked the family and villagers, leaving the community in grief. Reports indicated that about 18 relatives and neighbours gathered at the hospital as news spread.
Police have begun inquiries to determine the circumstances leading to the incident and whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.
