Max Purcell, a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion from Australia, has accepted an 18-month suspension after breaching anti-doping regulations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Tuesday.
The violation occurred in late 2023, when Purcell unknowingly received intravenous vitamin infusions that exceeded the permissible limit of 100 ml within a 12-hour period.
Despite his claim that the clinic had been informed of his status as a professional athlete, Purcell received infusions of over 500 ml on two occasions. As a result, he has been barred from participating in, coaching at, or attending ITIA-sanctioned tennis events until June 11, 2026. However, his full cooperation during the investigation led to a 25% reduction in the suspension period.
“This case highlights that anti-doping rules are not limited to banned substances but also prohibited methods,” said Karen Moorhouse, CEO of ITIA. The ruling underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining integrity and fairness in the sport.
