Gajapati Kapilendra Deva’s 591st coronation anniversary, “Gajapati Divas,” was observed today at the M.K.C.G. Auditorium of Utkal University. The event was jointly organized by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi and the Beyond Heritage Trust.
Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj graced the occasion as the chief guest. He formally inaugurated a special exhibition titled “Samara, Samrat O Sanatan: Gajapati Kapilendra Deva”, which showcases the life and achievements of the legendary Gajapati ruler.
In his address, the Minister highlighted Kapilendra Deva’s bravery and historic contributions, describing his reign as the golden period for Odia language, culture, and identity. He emphasized the ruler’s role in strengthening Odia pride and heritage.
A short documentary film titled “Lakhe Rajara Maudamani: Gajapatinka Gourabamaya Gatha” (The Jewel Among a Lakh Kings: The Glorious Saga of the Gajapatis) was also released during the programme.
Two panel discussions were held on the themes:
• “Odisha’s Glorious History in the Context of Research and Educational Renaissance”
• “From Regional Hero to National Symbol”
Prominent attendees included Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, Padma Shri awardee Adwaita Charan Gadnayak, historian Prof. Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, former Director of the National Manuscripts Mission Prof. Prafulla Kumar Mishra, Utkal University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chandi Prasad Nand, and Secretary of Odisha Sahitya Akademi Dr. Chandra Shekhar Hota.
The programme paid rich tributes to the illustrious legacy of Gajapati Kapilendra Deva, one of Odisha’s greatest warrior-kings.
