Manu Bhaker vs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Debate Highlights India’s Cricket Bias in Sports Recognition

A recent public interaction has reignited debate over how sports achievements are recognised in India after Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker was asked about teenage cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at an event meant to celebrate shooting excellence.

The moment, which took place during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the National Rifle Association of India, drew criticism for shifting focus away from Bhaker’s accomplishments to an unrelated cricketing figure.

Cricket’s Dominance vs Olympic Excellence

Cricket remains India’s most followed sport, often dominating media coverage and public attention. However, critics argue that this popularity sometimes overshadows achievements in other disciplines.

Manu Bhaker’s performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 stands as a landmark moment in Indian sporting history. She secured two bronze medals—one in the women’s 10m air pistol and another in the mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh—becoming the first Indian athlete to win multiple medals at a single Olympics.

The Rise of a Young Cricket Sensation

At the same time, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of cricket’s brightest young talents. Rising to prominence through the IPL, he stunned audiences with record-breaking performances, including a rapid century at just 14.

His success continued with a standout performance in the U-19 World Cup, where he played a match-winning innings to secure the title for India. His fearless batting style has drawn praise from top international bowlers and experts alike.

Context Matters in Public Recognition

While cross-sport comparisons are common, timing and context play a crucial role. Observers noted that bringing up a cricketer during an event dedicated to shooting appeared misplaced.

Experts argue that recognising athletes within their own sporting context helps maintain respect for their achievements and avoids diluting the significance of their contributions.

Social Media and Narrative Shifts

The discussion also reflects a broader trend where narratives around athletes are often shaped by viral moments rather than sustained achievements.

Manu Bhaker herself previously faced similar distractions when unrelated social media speculation overshadowed her Olympic success, diverting attention from her sporting milestones.

A Champion’s Continued Excellence

Despite fluctuating media attention, Bhaker has maintained her position among India’s top athletes. She was honoured with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and continues to perform consistently at international and domestic competitions.

Her achievements reflect discipline, composure, and long-term excellence—qualities that define success at the highest level of sport.

The Need for Balanced Sports Coverage

The incident has once again highlighted the need for more balanced recognition across sports in India. While cricket’s popularity is undeniable, experts suggest that Olympic and non-cricket achievements deserve equal visibility and respect.

Encouraging diverse sports coverage not only honours athletes fairly but also inspires broader participation across disciplines.
