A 42-year-old man was shot dead in Begunia, Khurda district, Odisha, on Monday night in a suspected case of murder linked to a past rivalry.
The victim, identified as Basudeb Parida alias Tutu from Jamusahi under Deuli panchayat, died instantly after miscreants fired at him on the Dallak–Samantaraypur road around 8 pm. Police suspect the attack stemmed from disputes related to mining business activities.
Reports said Basudeb had stepped out in the evening when two armed assailants arrived on a black Bullet motorcycle (OD 33 AO 9986). They fired multiple rounds at close range, hitting him in the head and chest. One bullet exited his body, while another was recovered from the spot.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Basudeb briefly interacted with local youths before the attackers struck. Investigators believe more than two people were involved, with some youths allegedly monitoring his movements.
Hearing the gunshots, residents rushed to the scene. The assailants fled into a nearby forest, abandoning the motorcycle. Basudeb was taken to Khurda district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Begunia police seized the motorcycle and began investigating the murder. No arrests have been made yet, and no formal complaint was filed at the time of reporting. Authorities suspect long-standing enmity and mining-related disputes triggered the attack.
