A long-cherished dream of the people of Malkangiri became reality today as an aircraft successfully completed its trial run at the district airport.
The landmark event marks a decisive step forward for the Udan scheme and brings regular air connectivity within touching distance for one of Odisha’s most remote districts.
Top district and aviation officials gathered to witness the historic trial. Security teams conducted rigorous day-and-night checks to ensure every inch of the airport was safe. Present on the occasion were Assistant Director (Security) Manoj Kumar Das, Assistant Director (Aero Safeguard) Neeraj Kumaran Nayak, Additional District Magistrate Bedabar Pradhan, Superintendent of Police Vinod Patil, District Forest Officer Sai Kiran, Sub-Collector Duryodhan Bhoi and other senior officers.
The current 1,600-metre runway will soon be expanded to 3,000 metres. The Odisha government plans to develop Malkangiri Airport as a full-fledged Udan hub in the coming years.
Regular services within a month
Within the next 30 days, daily Udan flights will commence using 9-seater aircraft. The initial route will take passengers from Malkangiri to Jeypore for a quick 25-minute refuelling stop before continuing to Bhubaneswar. In the near future, the network is expected to expand to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
A new chapter of progress
For the residents of Malkangiri, this development is nothing short of transformative.
Better air connectivity is expected to open doors to improved education, faster access to quality healthcare, and fresh business opportunities. Officials believe the district is now poised to emerge as a key growth centre, contributing significantly to both district and state-level economic development.
