A major rail accident was narrowly averted on Thursday morning when a coach of the Mahima Gosain Express (Sambalpur–Shalimar) derailed while approaching Sambalpur Railway Station.
According to railway sources, the mishap occurred around 9:15 AM when one coach of the passenger train suddenly veered off the track. Fortunately, all passengers onboard escaped unhurt, and no fatalities or injuries have been reported.
Railway officials promptly initiated recovery operations and launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. Preliminary assessments suggest minor technical issues might have led to the incident, although official confirmation is awaited.
The incident has raised fresh concerns around railway infrastructure and passenger safety in Odisha, even as the Indian Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rainfall in the region that may impact rail services further.
Passengers were shifted to safety, and subsequent train schedules were adjusted to accommodate delays caused by the incident.
