Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that the long‑standing Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh will be resolved by Diwali this year.
Speaking after a meeting with the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in New Delhi, Majhi said both states had reached an understanding to settle the issue of water sharing and management within three months. The discussions were attended by the Union Jal Shakti Minister, who supported the conciliatory approach.
Majhi emphasised that Odisha’s rights and farmers’ future were given top priority during the talks. “Decisions on Mahanadi water management will be taken keeping farmers’ interests secure,” he stated.
The announcement has raised hopes among farmers and residents in downstream regions who depend heavily on the Mahanadi. The decades‑old dispute, which has been pending before a tribunal, now appears closer to resolution through mutual cooperation and dialogue.
With both states agreeing to a friendly settlement, expectations are high that the dispute will finally be resolved, ending years of uncertainty and ensuring sustainable water management for agriculture and livelihoods.
