Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured that the long‑pending Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh will be resolved by Diwali this year, following a high‑level meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi.
The meeting was attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and senior officials from both states. Majhi said Odisha strongly presented its case, prioritising farmers’ future, state water rights and resource security.
He emphasised that constructive dialogue, mutual cooperation and a spirit of harmony would lead to a permanent and satisfactory solution. Discussions will continue at both ministerial and official levels over the next three months, with the Central Water Commission facilitating the process.
Majhi noted that while Odisha had long been agreeable to dialogue, Chhattisgarh’s recent concurrence paved the way for the Centre to convene the meeting. “By Diwali, we will certainly reach a good decision. Under the triple‑engine government, this dispute will be resolved,” he said.
