The holy festival of Maha Shivratri is being observed across Odisha with great enthusiasm and devotion. Major Shaiva shrines, especially in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack, are witnessing a surge of devotees who have gathered to participate in rituals and darshan from early morning on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Lingaraj Temple: Over 200 Officers Deployed

In Bhubaneswar, the iconic Lingaraj Temple is preparing for one of the most significant rituals of the day, the raising of the Mahadeepa at 10 PM tonight. The Police Commissioner has closely reviewed the security arrangements due to the expected massive turnout of devotees. In total, 41 platoons of police and 200 officers have been deployed at the temple to ensure smooth crowd management and the safety of all attendees.

Authorities have issued a stern warning, stating that strict action will be taken against anyone using fake passes to gain access.

Security and Arrangements at Other Temples

Puri:

In Puri, the Loknath Temple is one of the central points of Maha Shivratri celebrations, with thousands of pilgrims expected to participate in the Jagar Yatra. The Puri SP confirmed that five platoons of police have been deployed to manage the crowds and ensure orderly darshan throughout the night.

Cuttack:

In Cuttack, authorities have made comprehensive arrangements at the Dhabaleswar Temple, where the Mahadeepa will be raised at 1 AM on February 16. The police have confirmed that security measures for the Jagar observance at the temple have been completed to ensure a peaceful and safe experience for all.

Devotees Gather for Rituals and Darshan

Throughout the day and night, Odisha’s Shaiva shrines will be filled with devotees performing rituals, lighting lamps, and participating in bhajans and chants. The raising of the Mahadeepa at various temples is a key tradition that marks the culmination of Maha Shivratri, symbolizing the divine light of Lord Shiva.

Conclusion

As Maha Shivratri is celebrated across Odisha, the state is under heightened security to ensure the smooth conduct of rituals. The spirit of devotion, discipline, and spiritual fervour is alive in every corner, as devotees prepare to participate in one of the most sacred and significant festivals in the Hindu calendar.
