Odisha is bracing for a stretch of turbulent weather as a fresh low-pressure system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, triggering widespread alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD has warned that the system is likely to move west-northwestward, affecting northern and western districts of Odisha as well as neighbouring states. The result: heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 40 kmph, with coastal areas witnessing even stronger gusts reaching 55 kmph.
As of Thursday morning, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, and Boudh districts, urging residents to take caution. A Yellow Warning is in place for 13 other districts including Mayurbhanj, Angul, Bargarh, and Kalahandi.
Rainfall is projected to intensify through June 30, with intermittent downpours forecast for parts of Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj. Coastal regions such as Puri, Bhadrak, and Cuttack are also expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds.
Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions expected to persist at least until June 26.
This weather development follows a pattern of increased monsoonal activity in the region, heightening concerns over possible flooding and disruptions to daily life. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and urging citizens to follow updates and exercise caution.
