Weather scientists forecast the formation of the first low-pressure area of the 2026 monsoon season over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha coast around June 24–25.
The system is expected to activate the monsoon and bring widespread rainfall across the state.
According to meteorological models, a cyclonic circulation or low-pressure zone may develop near the northwest Bay of Bengal. Experts said this system will strengthen the southwest monsoon winds, expand rainfall coverage, and accelerate the monsoon’s advance into central India and island regions.
Despite monsoon entry into more than 20 districts, Odisha continues to experience intense heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre noted that significant rainfall is unlikely before June 21, leaving residents to endure hot and humid conditions. Officials said relief from the heat will arrive only after the low-pressure system forms.
Meteorologists emphasised that the upcoming system will play a crucial role in reviving monsoon activity, which has remained weak since its initial onset. The anticipated rainfall will help ease water scarcity and support agricultural activities across the state.
