A low-pressure system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal under the influence of an active cyclonic circulation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Sunday.
The system is expected to move in a northwestward direction over the next 48 hours, influencing weather conditions in Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
According to IMD predictions, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in several parts of northern Odisha and adjoining areas, while coastal regions may experience gusty winds ranging from 40–50 km/h.
Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into deep-sea areas due to the possibility of rough sea conditions. Authorities are monitoring the system closely as it may intensify further depending on evolving weather patterns.
This development marks a significant boost to the monsoon activity across eastern India, which has seen scattered rains in recent days. The next 48 hours remain critical for residents in the affected regions, with advisory updates expected from the IMD.
