Lakshya Sen defeated former world champion Loh Kean Yew to reach the semifinals of the Japan Masters 2025 in Kumamoto City on Friday.
The Indian shuttler produced a commanding performance in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event.
Seeded seventh, Sen dominated Loh with sharp strokes and relentless pace. He won 21-13, 21-17 in just 39 minutes. The victory marked his seventh win in ten career meetings against the Singaporean. Sen, ranked world No. 15, had earlier finished runner-up at the Hong Kong Open in September.
The opening game saw both players locked at 4-4. Sen broke away with an 11-8 lead at the interval. He unleashed six consecutive points to move 18-9 ahead and closed the game with authority. Loh attempted a comeback in the second game. He stayed level at 9-9 before Sen surged to 15-9. Loh narrowed the margin to 17-18, but Sen held his nerve and sealed the match.
Sen’s all-around control and aggressive shot-making exposed Loh’s struggles. The Indian champion displayed confidence and composure throughout the contest. His ability to accelerate at crucial moments ensured a decisive result.
Sen now faces Japan’s sixth seed and world No. 13 Kenta Nishimoto in the semifinals. The clash promises intensity as Nishimoto enjoys strong home support. Sen aims to continue his fine run and secure a place in the final.
