Khurdha: The Central Burerau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested an Income Tax officer here for accepting bribe from a jeweller.
The officer identified as Suman Sundar Sahoo has been brought to the CBI regional office in Bhubaneswar for questioning.
According to report, jeweller Debendra Kumar Saho, who owns a jewellery showroom at Khurdha Traffic square, had lodged a complaint with CBI following which the anti-corruption agency raided him and arrested.
The tax officer allegedly demanded bribe from the jeweller to hush-up income tax related document of the businessman. Debendra had allegedly paid Rs 5 lakh as bribe in the first phase and Rs 5 lakh along with jewelleries in the second phase.
The officer later demanded Rs 10 lakh from the businessman following which he informed the matter to CBI.
Acting on the complaint, a team led by CBI DSP Pankaj Kumar raided the residence of the erring officer at Sriram Nagar in the town.
The team seized Rs 5 lakh which he received from Debendra. Further investigation is underway, official said.
