Odisha Crime Branch Cyber Police arrested a Khurda resident in connection with a massive online investment fraud involving fake trading platforms.
Investigators revealed that cyber fraudsters initially contacted the victim through social media and later added him to a WhatsApp group. They lured him into investing in applications such as RCL-PMA, FIVEMAX, 5 PAISA V10705 TRADERS HUB, promising high and assured returns. Believing these false assurances, the victim transferred a staggering Rs 2,01,50,000 to multiple bank accounts linked to the fraudsters.
The investigation team, led by Inspector Bijit Kumar Behera, analysed transaction details and digital evidence before conducting a crackdown in Bhubaneswar. They identified and arrested Manoranjan Rout (42), son of Adikanda Rout, residing at Metro Satellite City, Hanspal, Khurda district. Police seized incriminating materials, including mobile phones and SIM cards, from his possession.
Authorities forwarded the accused to SDJM, Bhubaneswar, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The Crime Branch urged citizens to remain vigilant against unsolicited investment offers on social media and messaging apps. Officials advised people to always verify before investing and to report suspicious activities to the 1930 Cyber Helpline or the nearest police station.
This arrest highlights the growing threat of digital fraud and reinforces the importance of cyber awareness among the public.
