Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court has been relieved of his judicial responsibilities amidst allegations of unaccounted cash being discovered at his residence following a fire.
The High Court issued a new roster reassigning Justice Varma’s cases to Justices Subramanium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar.
The incident occurred on March 14, when a fire broke out in a storeroom linked to Justice Varma’s premises. Reports suggest that burnt cash was recovered from the scene, triggering widespread controversy and media coverage.
In response, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna ordered an inquiry and requested Justice Varma to preserve his phone data for investigation. Justice Varma has categorically denied the allegations, calling them baseless and accusing the media of defamation.
The case is under scrutiny by a three-member committee appointed to conduct a thorough investigation. As the inquiry unfolds, the legal and public communities await clarity on the matter.
