Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated India’s first Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for mobile devices in Noida, a landmark step in the country’s journey toward electronics self-reliance.

Set up by Optiemus Electronics in collaboration with Corning Incorporated (USA), the facility will produce high-quality tempered glass under the globally recognized “Engineered by Corning” brand. The products will cater to both domestic and international markets, reducing India’s dependence on imports for this critical mobile accessory.

Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw emphasized that India is now poised to manufacture every component of mobile phones—including chips, cover glass, and server parts—under the Make in India initiative. He also announced that a Made in India chip will be launched soon, further boosting the country’s electronics ecosystem.

The facility, with an initial investment of Rs 70 crore, will produce 25 million units annually and generate 600 direct jobs. Phase 2 will scale up to 200 million units with an additional ₹800 crore investment, creating over 4,500 jobs.

Industry leaders hailed the move as transformative. Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, stated that the goal is for every Indian mobile user to use BIS-certified, Made in India tempered glass. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mahindroo highlighted the segment’s labor-intensive nature and its potential to support MSMEs and exports.

India’s electronics sector has grown sixfold in the past 11 years, reaching Rs 11.5 lakh crore in production and Rs 3 lakh crore in exports, employing 2.5 million people. The global tempered glass market is valued at over $60 billion, while India’s domestic demand exceeds 500 million pieces annually.
