Indian Navy commissions stealth frigates Udaygiri and Himgiri

The Indian Navy is set to commission two cutting-edge stealth frigates—INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri—under Project 17A at the Naval Base in Visakhapatnam.

The commissioning ceremony, presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marks the first time two frontline combatants built at separate shipyards are inducted simultaneously.

These multi-mission frigates, designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB), represent a leap in indigenous naval engineering. Udaygiri, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL), and Himgiri, constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), showcase advanced stealth features, modern propulsion systems, and a suite of Indian-developed weapons and sensors.

Udaygiri is notably the 100th ship designed by the WDB and the fastest of its class to be delivered post-launch, thanks to modular construction techniques. Both ships carry forward the legacy of their namesakes—INS Udaygiri (F35) and INS Himgiri (F34)—which served the nation for over three decades.

With approximately 75% indigenous content and support from hundreds of MSMEs, these frigates embody the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defense manufacturing. Upon commissioning, they will join the Eastern Fleet, enhancing India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
