India defeated Japan 2-1 in Pool A of the FIH Nations Cup 2026 to secure a semifinal berth at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre in Auckland.

Captain Salima Tete and forward Lalremsiami scored decisive goals, while Ai Hiramitsu struck for Japan.

India controlled possession early and created several chances before Salima broke the deadlock in the third quarter. Navneet Kaur’s penalty-corner strike found Nikki Pradhan, who redirected the ball to Salima for a close-range finish. Japan responded swiftly as Hiramitsu converted a penalty corner to level the score.

With the match finely poised, India regained the lead in the 49th minute. Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam delivered a precise pass into the circle, and Lalremsiami’s deft touch guided the ball into the net. India’s defence held firm under pressure, denying Japan’s late surge and sealing the victory.

Midfielder Jyoti celebrated her 100th international cap, marking a personal milestone in India’s winning effort. The triumph, India’s second consecutive win, lifted them to six points and the top of Pool A. The team will face Uruguay next, aiming to maintain momentum and qualify for the FIH Pro League.

India’s disciplined play and sharp finishing underscored their growing confidence under Salima’s leadership. The win strengthened their campaign and showcased the team’s resilience against a technically strong Japanese side.
