India launched their three-match ODI series against New Zealand with a hard-fought 4-wicket victory in the opening game at the Kotambi Stadium, successfully chasing down a challenging target of 301 in a nail-biting finish.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, India restricted New Zealand to 300/8 in their 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell provided the backbone of the innings with an aggressive 84, helping the visitors recover and post a competitive total on a batting-friendly surface.

In reply, India got off to a solid start before Virat Kohli took centre stage with a classy 93 off 86 balls, including elegant boundaries and a six. His dismissal, caught off Kyle Jamieson shortly after raising hopes of a century, sparked a late collapse that brought New Zealand back into the contest. Jamieson finished with key wickets to create tension in the final overs.

However, KL Rahul held his nerve at the crease, guiding the lower order through the pressure. In a dramatic climax, Rahul unleashed three consecutive boundaries — 4, 4, 6 — to finish the game in style, taking India to victory with overs to spare and sparking wild celebrations.

The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the series, showcasing their chasing prowess despite the late scare. The second ODI is scheduled for January 14.
