Addressing a special session on Extreme Heat Risk Governance at the United Nations, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. P.K. Mishra, underscored the urgent need for global cooperation in combating rising temperatures.

He highlighted India’s progressive stance in extreme heat risk mitigation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Since 2016, India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has spearheaded efforts to decentralise Heat Action Plans (HAPs), aiding over 250 cities in implementing tailored strategies to minimise heat-related fatalities. Dr. Mishra emphasised the importance of integrating traditional wisdom, green infrastructure, and innovative cooling technologies into urban planning.

The government has enabled disaster mitigation funds for heatwave prevention, ensuring inclusive collaboration among local authorities, the private sector, and research institutions. The session at Geneva focused on enhancing early warning systems and strengthening healthcare infrastructure to tackle heat emergencies.

Dr. Mishra urged nations to develop a localised heat-humidity index and stressed that extreme heat disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including outdoor workers and the elderly. India remains committed to sharing its expertise with global partners, reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainable climate resilience.
