India’s batting collapsed yet again on Day 3 of the second Test against South Africa at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, but Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav held firm to steady the innings before lunch.
India began confidently in response to South Africa’s massive first-innings total of 489. Yashasvi Jaiswal struck the first half-century by an Indian batter in the series, guiding the hosts to 95/1. However, his dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse. India lost six wickets for just 27 runs across the tea interval, leaving the side reeling.
Marco Jansen proved to be the chief destroyer. The left-arm pacer struck thrice in the afternoon session, removing captain Rishabh Pant and others in a fiery burst. His spell left India staring at the possibility of a follow-on, especially after losing the first Test in Kolkata.
At 172/7 after 67 overs, Sundar and Kuldeep offered resistance. Sundar reached 32 not out, while Kuldeep dug in with 13 off 82 balls. Their partnership crossed fifty runs, frustrating South Africa and forcing skipper Temba Bavuma to recall Jansen for another burst before lunch.
The eighth-wicket stand showcased determination as India sought to avoid further damage. Sundar rotated strike effectively, while Kuldeep defended stoutly against spin and pace. The duo’s resilience gave India a glimmer of hope, though the deficit remained daunting at over 300 runs.
India’s immediate challenge lies in avoiding the follow-on. With only the lower order left, Sundar and Kuldeep must extend their stand to keep South Africa from tightening their grip further.
