In a significant move, the Income Tax Department on Thursday launched a massive operation targeting more than 20 properties linked to slain Odisha Minister Naba Kishore Das, over allegations of large-scale tax evasion.
According to official sources, simultaneous raids were carried out at locations in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and New Delhi, including Das’s residences and offices. Over 20 IT teams were mobilised as part of the coordinated crackdown.
Key Developments:
-
Teams have reportedly seized key documents and digital evidence.
-
At least two teams are searching the late minister’s Jharsuguda residence.
-
Properties linked to close associates and family members of Naba Das are also under scrutiny.
This operation follows a previous round of raids conducted earlier this year in Sambalpur, which focused on the assets of Brajakishore Das, a super-class contractor and the brother of Naba Das.
Naba Das, a powerful political figure in Odisha, was known for his roles in both the Congress and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) before his assassination in January 2023. The recent raids have stirred political speculation in the state, given Das’s controversial legacy and significant influence in western Odisha.
Officials say the current investigation aims to uncover the extent of financial irregularities and determine how assets and income were concealed.
