The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive seven-day severe weather warning for the state of Odisha.

From May 6 to May 12, 2026, the region is expected to experience significant weather disruptions, including light to moderate rainfall, sudden thunderstorms, lightning strikes, gusty winds, and isolated hailstorms.

Residents and local authorities are advised to exercise caution and stay updated as the upper air cyclonic circulation over the region drives these unstable weather patterns.

Day-by-Day Forecast and Warnings

Day 1 (Valid until 0830 hrs IST on May 6, 2026)

  • Weather Activity: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at a few places across all districts of Odisha.
  • Orange Warning: Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hailstorms, and gusty surface winds (reaching 50–60 kmph) are highly likely at isolated places in the districts of Angul, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sundergarh. Heavy rainfall accompanied by 50–60 kmph winds is also expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal.
  • Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms and winds reaching 40–50 kmph are expected in Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Boudh, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Sonepur, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda. Winds of 30–40 kmph are likely in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nawarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

Day 2 (Valid until 0830 hrs IST on May 7, 2026)

  • Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) are forecast across all major districts of Odisha, with Mayurbhanj experiencing stronger winds (up to 40–50 kmph).

Day 3 (Valid until 0830 hrs IST on May 8, 2026)

  • Yellow Warning: Gusty winds (30–40 kmph) along with lightning at one or two places across Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.

Day 4 to Day 6 (May 9 – May 11, 2026)

  • Weather Activity: The wet spell gradually recedes to northern coastal districts, bringing continued thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak. Dry weather will prevail over the rest of the state.

Day 7 (Valid until 0830 hrs IST on May 12, 2026)

  • Weather Activity: Isolated, light to moderate thunderstorms with lightning and 30–40 kmph winds are expected to continue in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak.

Advisory and Safety Measures

Authorities recommend the following safety tips during these adverse weather conditions:

  • Stay Indoors: Avoid remaining outdoors during lightning and high-speed winds.
  • Secure Belongings: Keep loose objects and livestock protected.
  • Avoid Trees and Poles: Stay clear of trees, electrical poles, and water bodies.
