A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Odisha’s Sundargarh district after a drunk youth climbed a high-voltage electricity pole demanding to meet his girlfriend.
The incident occurred in Budakata under Kutra block late Sunday night, creating panic among locals.
Witnesses said the youth climbed the pole around 10 pm and began shouting and crying. Villagers gathered at the spot as he demanded that his girlfriend be brought there immediately. He threatened to harm himself if his demand was ignored.
Alarmed residents alerted the police and fire services. Officers and firefighters reached the scene and tried to convince him to come down safely. Their initial efforts failed as the youth continued shouting from the top of the pole.
Police then contacted his girlfriend and requested her presence. After prolonged counselling by her, family members, and police officials, the youth finally agreed to descend. The tense situation lasted nearly four hours before he was rescued unharmed around 2 am.
