‘I Was Completely Spent’: Virat Kohli Finally Reveals The Real Reason Behind Quitting India’s Test Captaincy

Speaking during the RCB Innovation Lab event, Kohli admitted that the burden of leading India across formats while carrying the expectations of the batting unit completely drained him.

“I was completely spent. There was nothing left in the tank,” Kohli said while reflecting on the toughest phase of his cricket career.

‘I Was Completely Consumed By Leadership’

Virat Kohli resigned as India’s Test captain on January 15, 2022, shortly after India lost the Test series in South Africa.

At the time, the decision shocked fans across the cricketing world.

Now, the former skipper says he had reached a stage where the pressure of leadership became emotionally exhausting.

“I became the focal point of our batting unit and also the focal point of leadership. I did not realise how much load both those things would bring into my daily life,” Kohli said.

The star batter explained that his obsession with keeping Indian cricket at the top made him ignore his own mental well-being for years.

“But because I was so driven to make sure Indian cricket stayed on top, I did not really pay attention to myself. By the time I left captaincy, I was completely consumed by it. It was gruesome,” he added.

Kohli Says Nobody Asked If He Was Okay

One of the most emotional moments from Kohli’s interaction came when he revealed how isolated leadership made him feel.

The former India captain said that during his long tenure, he rarely had the opportunity to think about himself because leadership required him to constantly focus on others.

“Leadership is more about management than coaching. You are always thinking about your team and how to get the best out of people,” Kohli explained.

He then made a deeply personal revelation.

“Towards the end of my captaincy tenure, I realised nobody had asked me for almost nine years — ‘How are you doing?’”

The statement quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising Kohli’s honesty and vulnerability.

Virat Kohli’s Historic Captaincy Legacy

Despite the emotional toll, Kohli remains India’s most successful Test captain.

India national cricket team won 40 of the 68 Tests played under his leadership.

Some of the biggest milestones during the Kohli era included:

  • Historic Test series win in Australia (2018–19)
  • Five consecutive ICC Test maces
  • Dominant overseas performances
  • Aggressive fast-bowling culture in Indian cricket

Kohli first captained India during the Adelaide Test in 2014 after MS Dhoni missed the match due to injury.

He officially became full-time Test captain later that year and transformed India into one of the world’s strongest Test sides alongside coach Ravi Shastri.

Fans React To Kohli’s Emotional Confession

Kohli’s comments triggered massive reactions online, with many fans saying the former captain carried Indian cricket during one of its most demanding phases.

Several users praised him for speaking openly about burnout and mental exhaustion in elite sport.

Many also pointed out how leadership pressure in modern cricket often goes unnoticed despite constant public scrutiny.

Kohli Continues To Inspire Beyond Captaincy

Even after stepping down from leadership roles, Virat Kohli remains one of the most influential figures in world cricket.

Fans continue to admire not only his performances on the field but also his willingness to discuss mental pressure, expectations and personal struggles openly.

His latest comments have once again reminded cricket fans about the immense sacrifices behind years of leadership at the highest level.
