A 45‑year‑old home guard deployed for Rath Yatra duty in Puri died under mysterious circumstances late Saturday night, with initial suspicion pointing to a possible snakebite.

The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Kumar Mahanta, a resident of Hundapita village under Ghatgaon police limits in Kendujhar district. He was part of a 50‑member contingent of home guards from Kendujhar assigned to security duty during the annual Rath Yatra festival.

Mahanta reportedly fell ill while on duty and was rushed for treatment, but he could not be saved. His sudden death has cast a shadow over the festive atmosphere in Puri, where thousands of devotees had gathered for the grand chariot procession.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family. The CM announced an ex‑gratia of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) and assured that one eligible member of Mahanta’s family would be appointed as a home guard.

In his message, Majhi prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended solidarity with the grieving family during this difficult time.
