Trump’s Party Loses Congress: Democrats Seize House and Senate in Historic Midterm Sweep

VIEWS

In a historic political shift, the Democratic Party captured majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The outcome delivers a decisive rebuke to President Donald Trump and ends unified Republican control of Congress for the remainder of his second term.

Driven by low presidential approval ratings, widespread voter anxiety over rising living costs, and growing opposition to U.S. military involvement in Iran, Democratic candidates recorded major victories across traditionally conservative strongholds, including Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, and Iowa.

House and Senate Power Balance Shifts

According to preliminary projections, Democrats are on track to secure a decisive 255-seat majority in the 435-member House of Representatives. The gains put Representative Hakeem Jeffries in line to become Speaker of the House.

The shift was equally pronounced in the Senate, where Democratic candidates unseated Republican incumbents in key statewide contests:

  • Texas Senate Breakthrough: 37-year-old state representative James Talarico defeated Republican candidate Ken Paxton to win Texas’s U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first Democrat to represent Texas in the Senate since 1988.
  • Gubernatorial Upset: Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in Texas, becoming the state’s first Latina governor and ending more than three decades of Republican hold on the office.
  • Southern & Midwestern Victories: In South Carolina, Annie Andrews won the seat long held by the late Lindsey Graham, while former Governor Roy Cooper secured an open seat in North Carolina. In Ohio, Sherrod Brown defeated Senator Jon Husted, and Adam Hamilton won in Kansas, marking the state’s first Democratic U.S. Senator since 1932.

Responding to the election returns on Truth Social, President Donald Trump asserted that the party’s performance was impacted by his absence from the ticket, stating: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

Despite high-profile campaign spending—including an estimated $200 million spent by billionaire Elon Musk in support of Republican candidates in Texas—the GOP failed to flip a single Democratic-held seat in either chamber.

With the new legislative majorities, Democratic leaders have outlined early oversight priorities, including scrutiny of ongoing foreign conflict policies, global tariff structures, and executive branch compliance standards.
