Amid relentless rainfall in the upper catchment areas, the water level at Odisha’s Hirakud Reservoir rose to 610.21 feet on Saturday, prompting controlled floodwater discharge through 20 sluice gates. The maximum water-holding capacity of the reservoir is 630 feet.

Authorities from the Water Resources Department stated that the situation is being closely monitored and additional gate operations will depend on upstream inflow and rainfall over the next few days. Although no immediate danger has been reported, residents in low-lying and downstream areas along the Mahanadi River have been advised to stay alert.

In the past 24 hours, 43 blocks across 15 districts have recorded more than 50 mm of rainfall, significantly increasing river inflows. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has directed all district collectors in vulnerable zones to remain on high alert and ensure prompt disaster management measures.
