A fresh political confrontation erupted in Assam as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma repeated his assertion that Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is “100% a Pakistani agent” allegedly planted by foreign powers. The comments were made during a press interaction in Guwahati on Friday.
Sarma stated,
“Gaurav Gogoi is a Pakistani agent, he is purely that. He has been planted by foreign power in our country.”
He further challenged that a defamation case could be filed against him if his claims were untrue, adding,
“I have so much information that when I reveal it, you will realize he is 100 per cent a Pakistan agent. I am speaking with appropriate proof.”
Gogoi Fires Back
In response, Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress chief and Member of Parliament, criticized Sarma’s timing and credibility. He said the remarks were “an example of why he is unfit as the Chief Minister of the people of Assam.”
Gogoi also highlighted the sensitivity of the moment, noting that Assam was mourning the death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Gogoi stated,
“Over the past few months, Himanta Biswa Sarma has lost credibility. Yesterday, while the entire state was watching Zubeen Garg perform for the last time in Roi Roi Binale, the Chief Minister’s comments reflected a growing fear of losing power. This is another example of why he is unfit as the Chief Minister of the people of Assam.”
‘Roi Roi Binale’ (meaning “Tears Still Flow”) was Zubeen Garg’s final film, which opened to packed theatres across Assam and other parts of India on Friday, according to PTI reports.
The ongoing political spat comes at a sensitive time in the state, with public attention focused on the passing of the celebrated singer and other pressing issues
