India fast bowler Harshit Rana has earned a surprise recall to the national squad for the third and final ODI against Afghanistan after completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Rana has joined the Indian team in Chennai ahead of the series finale. The 24-year-old pacer has been out of competitive action for several months after sustaining a knee injury that forced him to miss the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and the entire IPL season.

In an official statement, the BCCI said Rana had successfully completed his recovery programme at the Centre of Excellence and was now available for selection.

Important Opportunity Ahead of Overseas Tours

Rana’s return comes at a crucial time, with India preparing for upcoming tours of Ireland and England. Team management is keen to assess his match fitness and rhythm before the busy international schedule begins.

The young speedster last represented India during the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year. Since then, he has been undergoing rehabilitation and recovery.

Surprise Inclusion Despite Strong Performances by Young Pacers

Rana’s inclusion has attracted attention because emerging fast bowlers Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar have impressed during the ongoing Afghanistan series.

Gurnoor Brar has been among the standout performers, claiming six wickets in two matches, while Prince Yadav showcased his potential with a disciplined bowling display in the second ODI.

Despite their strong performances, selectors chose to expand the squad rather than replace any player, giving Rana an opportunity to regain competitive match practice.

India Already Seal Series

India have already secured the three-match ODI series with an unassailable 2-0 lead over Afghanistan. The final ODI now offers the team a chance to test bench strength and evaluate players ahead of future assignments.

With the Asia Games, Ireland tour and England series approaching, Rana’s return adds valuable depth to India’s fast-bowling resources.

India’s Squad for Third ODI Against Afghanistan

Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul (Wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey and Harshit Rana.
