India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to make his return to competitive cricket later this month, representing Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, following a BCCI directive mandating top players to play domestic cricket before representing India internationally.
Pandya becomes the second high-profile cricketer, after former captain Rohit Sharma, to comply with the BCCI diktat. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has not yet made any announcements and is currently in London with his family.
Recovery and Fitness Update
Hardik, 32, has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after sustaining a left quadriceps injury during India’s Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka.
The injury caused him to miss the tournament final against Pakistan and India’s subsequent white-ball series in Australia. Sources indicate Pandya is now nearing full match fitness and could feature in Baroda’s opening Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on November 26 in Hyderabad. If delayed, he is expected to play by the team’s second fixture.
Path Back to the Indian Team
Upon receiving his Return to Play (RTP) clearance from the CoE, Pandya will travel to Hyderabad to join the Baroda squad. Selectors and team management are keen for him to gain competitive match practice ahead of India’s upcoming series.
India’s schedule includes:
-
Three-match ODI series vs South Africa: Ranchi (Nov 30), Raipur (Dec 3), Visakhapatnam (Dec 6)
-
Five-match T20I series: Starting December 9 in Cuttack
Pandya’s participation in the domestic tournament will ensure he returns to international cricket after almost three months on the sidelines.
BCCI Compliance
Rohit Sharma reportedly expressed his intention to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, while Pandya’s move marks a strong statement of adherence to BCCI’s “play domestic to play for India” directive. The BCCI emphasizes that top players must regain match fitness and form in domestic competitions before national selection.
