The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially announced that Goa will host the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025, scheduled from October 30 to November 27.
This marks a monumental moment for Indian chess, as 206 elite players from over 90 countries descend on the coastal paradise for one of the sport’s most dramatic tournaments.
The eight-round knockout format will determine the top three finishers who will qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament — the gateway to the World Chess Championship. While five-time champion Magnus Carlsen is unlikely to participate, India’s own rising stars, including reigning World Champion D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun Erigaisi, are expected to be strong contenders.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized Goa’s appeal, citing its “stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality” as the perfect backdrop for a global chess celebration. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) echoed this sentiment, with President Nitin Narang calling it “a proud moment for Indian chess” and a chance to showcase India’s growing stature as a global chess hub.
This event follows India’s historic hosting of the World Cup in Hyderabad in 2002, where Viswanathan Anand clinched the title. With chess now deeply embedded in India’s sporting culture, the 2025 World Cup promises to be a landmark event for fans and players alike.
