New Delhi / Goa – December 11, 2025:
In a major breakthrough in the Goa nightclub fire investigation, the two brothers allegedly linked to the tragedy that claimed 25 lives have been detained in Thailand, according to sources familiar with the matter. Authorities have initiated the process to deport Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra to India to face trial.
The brothers, who co-owned the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora where the devastating fire broke out shortly after midnight on December 6, had left India within hours of the incident. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice was issued at the request of the CBI soon after.
MEA Reviewing Passport Cancellation Request
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is currently examining a request from the Goa government seeking to revoke the passports of the Luthra brothers. The move is expected to fast-track their deportation and prevent further international movement.
Investigations by Goa Police revealed that the brothers booked their flight to Thailand at 1:17 am on December 7, at a time when emergency teams were still attempting to contain the blaze and rescue trapped victims.
“Even as Goa Police and Fire Services were battling the flames, the Luthra brothers were preparing to flee the country,” an official familiar with the investigation said.
Court Declines Interim Protection
A New Delhi court on Wednesday refused to grant interim protection from arrest to the brothers. Their lawyers argued that they were not fleeing the country but were on a business trip, and claimed that they were licensees—not owners—of the nightclub. The defense further stated that daily operations were handled by staff, distancing the brothers from direct responsibility.
Five Staff Members Arrested as Probe Widens
Meanwhile, Goa Police have already arrested five managers and staff members connected to the nightclub. The fire, which erupted around midnight, spread rapidly through the venue located approximately 25 km from Panaji, trapping scores of people inside.
Indian authorities are now coordinating with officials in Thailand to complete the deportation process and bring the brothers back for questioning and trial.
Inquiry Report Within Eight Days, Says CM Sawant
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the inquiry report into the tragedy will be submitted within eight days. The state government has begun disbursing compensation to victims’ families and has launched stricter safety audits across entertainment venues to prevent similar disasters.
