The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of service for General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), reaffirming his leadership in India’s top military post.
The extension, announced on Wednesday, September 24, allows General Chauhan to continue in his dual role as CDS and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, until May 30, 2026, or until further orders.
General Chauhan was appointed as CDS on September 28, 2022, becoming the second officer to hold the position since its creation. Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981, he has served in several key command and staff roles throughout his distinguished career.
Known for his strategic acumen and operational leadership, General Chauhan has been honored with multiple prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
The extension signals continuity in India’s defence leadership amid evolving regional and global security challenges. His tenure is expected to further strengthen jointness among the armed forces and accelerate reforms in military affairs.
