Police have arrested Anil Meher (29), a murder accused from Sahajpani village under Lathor police limits in Bolangir district, five years after he fled following the crime.
On Friday, police produced Anil before the Patnagarh Court after bringing him back from Bengaluru, where he had been hiding.
According to reports, Anil had frequent disputes with his elder brother Kshiradhar Meher. On the evening of August 4, 2021, when his brother was away from home, Anil attacked his sister-in-law Surjyakanti Meher (38), with a sharp knife. He fled immediately after the assault. Surjyakanti was rushed to the Patnagarh Community Health Centre, where doctors declared her dead.
Based on Kshiradhar’s complaint, police registered a case (No. 105/2021) at Lathor police station. However, Anil managed to evade arrest and escaped to Bengaluru. During his time there, he married a woman and took up employment in a private company.
As the police failed to arrest him for five years, the Patnagarh Court issued a warrant against him. Acting on this warrant, current Lathor IIC Ramakant Sahu reopened the investigation.
After receiving a tip-off, Sahu led a four-member police team to Bengaluru. The team successfully arrested Anil and brought him back to Bolangir, where he was produced before the court.
