The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, is grappling with a growing menace of illegal cannabis trade, turning its streets into a hub for illicit activities.
On Monday, the Commissionerate Police’s Special Crime Unit (SCU) launched a targeted operation in the Tamando and Patrapada areas, uncovering a significant cannabis trafficking network.
The raids, conducted in response to credible intelligence, led to the seizure of over 10 kilograms of cannabis, cannabis cigarettes, chillums, and other drug paraphernalia. Four individuals, including a young woman, were detained in connection with the illegal trade.
The SCU, acting on tips about cannabis being sold under the guise of pan shops, tea stalls, and even mushroom shops, raided multiple locations across Dharmavihar, Jagamara, Patrapada, and Kalinga Vihar. The operation revealed a well-organised network, with preliminary investigations suggesting the detained individuals are part of a larger drug racket operating in the city. The seized items, including cannabis-packed cigarettes and smoking accessories, indicate a sophisticated supply chain catering to local demand.
Police Commissioner Dr. Suresh Dev Datta Singh emphasised the force’s commitment to curbing the illegal drug trade, stating, “This raid is part of our ongoing efforts to dismantle narcotic networks in Bhubaneswar. We are intensifying our operations to ensure the city remains safe from such illegal activities.” The detained suspects are currently under interrogation, with authorities working to uncover the masterminds behind the racket. The police have vowed to continue their crackdown, with more raids planned to root out drug trafficking in the capital.
The rise of the cannabis trade in Bhubaneswar has raised concerns among residents, with many calling for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
