In a historic step for the Indian diaspora, Santosh Sahu, an IT professional and technology executive of Odia origin, has officially entered the United States political arena by contesting for the mayoral seat in Milpitas, California.
Located at the heart of Silicon Valley, Milpitas is preparing for a crucial local municipal election, and Sahu is offering voters a fresh vision grounded in technological foresight, fiscal accountability, and modern urban planning.
Having lived and worked in the United States for nearly two decades after earning his education in Odisha, Sahu established a successful career in corporate leadership and entrepreneurship. Now, he aims to channel his extensive tech background into civic duty, taking on three opponents—including the incumbent mayor—in a nonpartisan race.
A Tech-Driven Agenda: AI Data Centres & Resident Privacy
As artificial intelligence reshapes Silicon Valley’s economic landscape, Sahu has made AI infrastructure policy a cornerstone of his campaign agenda. Pointing out that proposed AI data centre facilities require enormous amounts of electrical energy and water resources, Sahu advocates for comprehensive local regulations before approving major infrastructure projects. He emphasises that municipal leadership must assess long-term ecological and public utility impacts to ensure city resources remain sustainable for residents.
Privacy regulation is another key issue driving his platform. Sahu has championed guardrails surrounding automated municipal surveillance, specifically automated license plate recognition systems and street monitoring cameras. His push for balanced policies that prioritise resident civil liberties alongside public safety has resonated strongly across the local community.
Challenging the Status Quo with Financial Discipline
Criticising the existing city administration for adhering to stagnant policies over the last 8 to 12 years, Sahu insists that Milpitas requires dynamic leadership to tackle traffic congestion, skyrocketing living costs, and administrative challenges.
Key pillars of his campaign framework include:
-
Fiscal Transparency: Introducing rigorous budget evaluations and multi-year financial planning to eliminate structural deficits.
-
Public Services & Safety: Supporting core emergency services, infrastructure maintenance, and police staffing.
-
Civic Accountability: Restoring stability to City Hall through streamlined permitting and clear communication.
Grounded in Indian Heritage and Odia Roots
Despite carving out a major professional journey thousands of miles away from home, Sahu remains deeply connected to his Indian heritage and Odia roots. He credits his early education in Odisha and subsequent corporate career for instilling the discipline and analytical problem-solving skills required for public leadership.
Speaking on his transition from technology to public service, Sahu shared that his business background provided unique insights into organisational efficiency—skills he hopes to apply directly to municipal governance. Depending on election outcomes and progress made during his first tenure, Sahu envisions balancing his business ventures while serving the community, leaving open the possibility of future terms.
