KP Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday in connection with the deadly crackdown on anti-government protests last year, marking a major political development in Nepal.
The arrest comes just a day after Balendra Shah assumed office, signalling a decisive shift toward accountability following months of political turmoil.
Arrest Linked to Deadly Protest Crackdown
Oli, along with former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, has been taken into custody over allegations linked to the violent suppression of nationwide protests in September 2025.
The protests, largely driven by young demonstrators, escalated after a controversial social media ban and quickly transformed into a broader movement against economic hardship and governance issues.
At least 77 people lost their lives during the crackdown, with violence spreading across the country and eventually leading to the collapse of the government.
Probe Points to ‘Negligence’ by Leadership
A government-backed investigation report recommended legal action against Oli and other officials. While it did not establish a direct order to open fire, it highlighted a critical failure by authorities to prevent or control the violence.
The report noted that “no effort was made to stop or control the firing,” resulting in significant casualties, including minors.
New Government Moves Swiftly
The newly formed administration, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, has acted quickly to implement the findings of the probe commission.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung stated that the arrests are part of a broader effort to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice.
“This is not about revenge. It is about accountability and moving the country forward,” he said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to institutional reform.
Legal Consequences and Next Steps
According to recommendations by the commission, those found guilty could face up to 10 years in prison for negligence during the unrest.
The report also calls for action against several senior officials, including top police leadership at the time of the protests.
Authorities have indicated that further investigations and legal proceedings will continue in accordance with the law.
Background: Gen Z Protests and Political Shift
The protests in Nepal were initially triggered by digital restrictions but soon reflected deeper public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and governance.
The widespread unrest led to the fall of the previous administration and paved the way for a new leadership focused on reform and accountability.
