Rising floodwaters in the Bhargavi River have triggered severe bank erosion, creating intense panic among local residents in the Pipili and Nimapada blocks of Puri district. Swelling currents have started eroding large chunks of land, threatening nearby settlements and agricultural fields.
Key Areas Affected by Severe Erosion
- Pipili (Nuasasan Nuasahi): Near the Mining Padhi area, floodwaters have eroded over 200 feet of the riverbank, cutting deep into the surrounding land.
- Opposite Riverbank Collapse: Directly across the river, massive soil collapse has been reported, with nearly 100 feet of earth caving in directly into the Bhargavi River.
- Nimapada Block (Samarei): A similar severe soil collapse occurred along the riverbank near Samarei village, heightening fears of embankment breaches among villagers.
Rising Concern Among Local Residents
Local villagers living along the riverbanks are expressing deep concern over the continuous caving in of earth. With floodwaters rapidly washing away large patches of land, residents in low-lying areas of Pipili and Nimapada have urged the Irrigation Department to immediately reinforce the vulnerable riverbanks to prevent further damage to life and property.
