In a significant development, England’s star batter Harry Brook has been handed a two-year ban from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after withdrawing from the upcoming 2025 season.
Brook, who was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for Rs 6.25 crore in the mega auction, decided to pull out to focus on England’s home season following their challenging campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier announced stringent measures for players who withdraw after the auction, citing a two-year ban as a consequence. This rule aims to maintain the integrity and commitment towards the tournament.
Brook’s performance has been under scrutiny this year, with him scoring 91 runs from five T20Is and 97 runs from six ODIs. Despite these struggles, he is anticipated to take on a leadership role in England’s white-ball team after Jos Buttler’s resignation post-Champions Trophy exit.
This isn’t Brook’s first withdrawal from the IPL; he also missed the 2024 season to be with his family after his grandmother’s death. His IPL career includes a stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, where he scored 190 runs from 11 innings, including a memorable century against Kolkata Knight Riders.
As Brook focuses on international commitments, his absence will be felt by Delhi Capitals and the IPL community at large.
