In a heartfelt announcement that stunned the cricketing world, former India captain Virat Kohli officially retired from Test cricket on Monday morning, just ahead of India’s tour of England.
Sharing an emotional post on Instagram, Kohli reflected on a journey that began 14 years ago, thanking Test cricket for shaping him as a player and person.
“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote in his retirement post.
Kohli finishes his red-ball career with 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries, and holds the record as India’s most successful Test captain with 40 wins from 68 matches. His leadership included India’s historic 2018–19 Test series win in Australia, a feat unmatched before.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir, with whom Kohli had a turbulent on-field history, posted a touching note on X:
